Myopia, or short-sightedness, means distant objects look blurred while near vision stays clear. It happens when the eyeball is slightly too long or the cornea too curved, so light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it. It usually begins in childhood and stabilises in the early twenties.

What is hypermetropia?

Hypermetropia, or long-sightedness, means near objects are harder to focus on than distant ones. Light comes to a focus behind the retina because the eyeball is slightly short or the cornea too flat. Mild cases are compensated by the eye's own focusing effort, which causes eye strain and headaches.

Astigmatism is an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, shaped more like a rugby ball than a sphere. Light focuses at several points instead of one, so vision is blurred or distorted at every distance. It commonly occurs alongside myopia or hypermetropia and is correctable with glasses, lenses or LASIK.

Presbyopia is the normal age-related loss of near focusing power, usually noticed after 40. The natural lens stiffens, so reading small print becomes difficult and you hold things further away. It affects everyone eventually, including people who have had LASIK, and is managed with reading glasses or specific lens options.

Can LASIK remove glasses permanently?

For suitable candidates, LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea and corrects the existing refractive error, so most patients no longer need glasses for distance vision. The correction is stable and does not wear off. However, LASIK does not prevent presbyopia, so reading glasses are still likely to be needed after 40.

LASIK is not painful. Anaesthetic drops numb the eye completely and the laser stage takes only seconds per eye. You may feel light pressure during the procedure. For a few hours afterwards the eye can feel gritty and watery, which settles overnight with the prescribed drops and rest.

Who is not eligible for LASIK?

LASIK is unsuitable if your corneas are too thin, your spectacle power is still changing, or you have keratoconus, severe dry eye, advanced glaucoma or uncontrolled diabetes. It is also avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and generally under age 18. A detailed corneal assessment determines eligibility for each patient.

What is SMILE eye surgery?

SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, is a flapless laser procedure for myopia and astigmatism. A femtosecond laser shapes a thin disc of tissue inside the cornea, which is removed through a keyhole incision of two to four millimetres. Because no flap is created, corneal strength is better preserved.

PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, reshapes the corneal surface directly after gently removing the outer epithelial layer, with no flap created. It is preferred when corneas are too thin for LASIK, or for patients in contact sports. The visual result matches LASIK, but comfort and recovery take several days longer.

How long does LASIK recovery take?

Useful vision typically returns within 24 hours, and most patients resume work and driving in one to three days. Vision continues to sharpen and stabilise over four to six weeks. Avoid rubbing the eyes, swimming and dusty environments for a month, and use lubricating drops as advised.
